A Twist of Fate: How a Pivotal Career Decision Shaped My Multifamily Journey

|

As I reflect on my 30+ year career in the multifamily industry, I am reminded of a pivotal moment in the late 1980s that could have altered the trajectory of my professional life entirely. This story centers around my mother, a woman whose dedication and hard work not only defined her career but also significantly influenced mine.

My mother was an executive with the Apartment Association of Greater Dallas (AAGD), an organization that played a crucial role in the development and advocacy of the multifamily housing sector in the region. Her commitment to her job and her passion for the industry were evident in everything she did. However, in the late 1980s, she was presented with an enticing opportunity that could have changed everything.

The printers association, recognizing her exceptional leadership and management skills, offered her a prominent role within their organization. It was a tempting proposition that promised new challenges and potentially greater rewards. My mother, known for her thoughtful decision-making, was seriously considering the offer. The prospect of a new industry, new people, and new challenges was exciting, yet it also meant leaving behind a field she was deeply passionate about.

During this critical time, her boss at AAGD,  a very supportive leader, recognized her value and potential. He took a stand and insisted on her promotion to vice president, a role that not only acknowledged her contributions but also offered her greater responsibility and influence within the organization. This act of recognition and support was a testament to her capabilities and her integral role in the association.

Had my mother accepted the role with the printers association, the ripple effects on my career would have been profound. Growing up, I was deeply influenced by her dedication to the multifamily industry. Her experiences, stories, and the professional network she built became a part of my own career foundation. The apartment association events, discussions about industry trends, and her unwavering commitment to improving housing for families shaped my understanding and passion for the multifamily sector.

If she had transitioned to the printers association, it is likely that my exposure to and interest in the multifamily industry would have diminished. Instead of accompanying her to apartment association meetings and learning about the intricacies of property management, I might have found myself immersed in the world of printing technology and graphic arts. My career path could have taken a completely different direction, potentially leading me into a different industry altogether.

The multifamily industry, with its unique challenges and opportunities, has been my professional home for over three decades. I have had the privilege of witnessing the industry’s evolution, contributing to its growth, and building lasting relationships with colleagues and clients. My mother’s decision to stay with AAGD and her subsequent promotion to vice president not only solidified her own career but also indirectly set the course for mine.

Her boss’s insistence on her promotion was more than just a professional endorsement; it was an affirmation of the importance of recognizing and nurturing talent within an organization. This decision allowed my mother to continue her impactful work in the multifamily industry, ultimately inspiring me to follow in her footsteps. It is a poignant reminder of how the actions of one person can have far-reaching implications on the lives and careers of others.

Looking back, I am grateful for the support and opportunities my mother received, which in turn influenced my own career. The multifamily industry has provided me with a fulfilling and dynamic career, and I owe much of that to the foundation laid by both of my parents that were in the industry and the  unwavering dedicationthey both had. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of recognizing and supporting talent, and the profound impact that career decisions can have on future generations.

As I continue my journey in multifamily, I carry with me the lessons learned from my mother’s experiences. Her legacy serves as a constant reminder of the importance of passion, dedication, and the supportive relationships that shape our professional lives.
